The last date to apply is <strong>February 4th, 2013<\/strong> &#8211; hurry!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About ASTRON: &#8211; <\/strong>The Netherlands Institute for Radio in Astronomy (ASTRON<a title=\"ASTRON - Netherlands\" href=\"http:\/\/www.astron.nl\/about-astron\/-institute\/institute\" target=\"_blank\">, www.astron.nl\/about-astron\/-institute\/institute<\/a>) provides front-line observing capabilities for its own astronomers in-house, and for the wider national\/international community. It expects this strategy to regularly\u00a0result in astronomical discoveries that significantly influence our understanding of the content, the structure and the evolution of the Universe. ASTRON focuses on:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>the operation of front line observing facilities, in particular the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Observatory (WSRT) and LOFAR (the Low Frequency Array).<\/li>\n<li>the scientific exploitation of these telescopes (and other astronomical instruments across the world) via a strong, dynamic and expanding Astronomy Group.<\/li>\n<li>a strong technology development programme, encompassing both innovative instrumentation for existing telescopes and the new technologies needed for future facilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, its active in the international science policy arena, especially regarding the future of radio astronomy in Europe and the construction of the future, next generation radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About ASTRON-JIVE International Summer School<\/strong>: &#8211; The 2013 Summer Research Programme of ASTRON and JIVE (Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe) enables astronomy students (graduate or advanced under-graduate) to spend the summer (10 to 12 weeks) at the Dwingeloo Observatory, conducting astronomical research under the supervision of staff members. This year, the Summer Student Programme is a collaborative effort of JIVE and the ASTRON departments Astronomy Group, Radio Observatory and R&amp;D.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Possible topics of study include radio galaxies and quasars, aspects of observational cosmology, continuum and line emission\/absorption from normal and starbust galaxies, faint radio sources, pulsars, molecular clouds, cosmic magnetism, as well as working with LOFAR data. The actual project the successful candidate will work on will be defined after arrangement with the local supervisor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Who can apply: &#8211; <\/strong>3rd\/4th year undergraduate or post graduate students of Astronomy and related fields<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Location: &#8211; <\/strong>Netherlands<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Duration: &#8211; <\/strong>10-12 weeks (Starting June 2013, flexible)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Stipend: &#8211; <\/strong>The research grants will provide successful candidates with accommodation in the locality of the Observatory, a modest stipend for up to three months, and full travel reimbursement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>How to apply: &#8211; <\/strong>Please refer to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astron.nl\/about-astron\/visiting-opportunities\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ASTRON-JIVE International Summer School 2013 page<\/strong><\/a> for more info and application details.
