A unique, Creative and an ideal platform for students to get to learn about the organizations' culture and functioning, PS-1 is indeed a blessing in disguise, especially for some who have only their PS-1 Project as the sole torchbearer on their Resumes. I was lucky enough to get my first preference, given the mysterious algorithm the PS division applies to allocate companies.

Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), had a huge database and an Economics department in place, which definitely was an ideal place for me given my interest in Applied Econometrics. Mocked by the choice of city (Chennai) I chose at the first place (given how humid Chennai gets during summers and yeah other obvious reasons), I was determined to bring something fruitful on my desk. It was not until I reached the city during the afternoon hours that I could hear the echoes of my friends laughing out loud, for now I realized that they may have been right. The sound reverberated in my head given the scorching sun which was jelled with the humid weather. We slogged through daylight hours and after rejecting almost every other apartment we checked, we finally found a decent enough place to stay. I thought, will I be able to stand this for the next eight weeks?

We reached the Institute the next morning, and were walked through our schedules for the next two months. We were given orientations to the numerous departments by their department heads for almost two weeks. Students during the same time were allowed to choose their own departments and the available projects for which they shall be working the entire summer. As was crystal clear in my head of why I was here and where I should head, I got myself introduced to the Head of the Economics Department. After a bit of both formal and informal discussion, the faculty was convinced and agreed to be my mentor for the project (the details of which were yet to be discussed).

For weeks I was made to look into qualitative aspect of a project which in no way made sense to me. I was almost two thousand kilometers away from my home, and this definitely was not leading to any fruitful outcome I was expecting. With this dilemma of expressing my concern or not, on one of these days I finally decided to pay a visit to the faculty. I reached out to him and told him that the work allotted to me did not intrigue me enough and I wanted to do a quantitative analysis of a project that I had already thought off. Before I could expect an acceptance or rejection, I was faced with this situation which actually felt as if the world has collapsed around me. The professor told that he was a Sociology faculty and is not aware of much of the quantitative aspects, and that the previous Scientist who was working here has recently retired.

It was as if the city itself was not able to do full justice with me that it had packed a bigger and better fiasco. However I was not ready to give up, I went again to see the professor and I requested him that if it was possible for him to arrange a meeting with the retired Scientist. As a matter of surprise, may be after seeing my shrunken face from the previous meeting, the professor told me that he had already talked to that scientist and he would be paying a visit the next day so that I could raise my concerns and talk about the project. The meeting with the scientist on the next day was unexpectedly a fruitful one, and he promised to visit me twice a week to help me with my project. The next couple of weeks went in discussing the details and other plausible explanation to the various prospects of the project we chose. Later we went on to identifying the true variables and other relevant data collection for my project, for which I was even made to contact an outside dealer both over the phone and in person.

I attempted to do some regression analysis and tried to make some sense over the outputs I fetched, for which the two mentors helped me with what all they could or should I say that they were more curious than I ever was. The final report had some unexpected results and I was made to discuss at the possibilities of them being true. However it did open a new channel of thoughts for which I was praised heavily given the time constraint in which I finished my project. I finally closed off my report with a remark for it being open to further probe before any conclusion could be brought out of it.

One thing I genuinely learnt from this internship was that, it will not always be the case that we shall be served everything in our plates to ingest; sometimes we need to bend around and find the best we could rather than just giving up. It may not have been the best of my projects but I could definitely say that it was a hell of an experience and would be cherished by me for years. "}" data-sheets-userformat="{"2":513,"3":{"1":0},"12":0}">

About the Author: Rajat Seth, from BITS Pilani, takes us through his enriching journey at Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai.

BITS has a unique, standalone system in place which allows its students to get hands-on experience in the real world projects through a program called Practice School (PS). My project was to analyze the “Factors Responsible for the Export Performance of Leather Garments (Price) in India”. This topic required a great deal of knowledge about the leather and export industry, and so a considerable amount of time was spent in CLRI’s library to go through the previous research papers and other relevant materials. Once I had substantial information, I went on to meet the professors (usually twice a week) and discuss my findings with them. After a couple of weeks, when I had found my variables (factors), I went ahead to exploit the huge database of CLRI. Luckily, I was able to extract most of the data from there itself and for the remaining set (e.g labour wage rates), I was made to contact other outside institutions.

After collecting all the relevant data, a regression analysis was made to find out the significant factors that determined the price of the exported leather garments such as the availability of raw material (mainly leather) and disposable income of consumers.
