It is the end of May, and a fulfilling view of the Eiffel from above, the flight had just landed with dewdrops on the window pane. And the journey had just begun, and was getting better with time, starting with a train from Paris to Lille, towards northern France. All about to start with a new beginning, I was very much near in enriching the epitome of all the learning.<\/p>\n

Coming from textile design department, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Mumbai;\u00a0during the end of the third year, we are supposed to undertake an industrial internship for 8 weeks. Though being from a design background, my forte always lied in research in technical based design process in product design development. And yes, with that self-realization, the important step was to search for laboratories in textile research. At the same time, the preparation involved in forming the cover letter, curriculum vitae and the statement of purpose. Keeping it over finally, the search ended on, GEMTEX Lab (Laboratoire De Genie Et Materiaux Textiles), at Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Arts Et Industries Textiles, better known as ENSAIT in France. With the requirements sent, lo and behold, within a day I was there with a positive reply from the professor. The selection was based on the quality of CV\u00a0and its match with\u00a0the ongoing project at the lab. It was like a mission accomplished<\/p>\n

And\u00a0now all set to start, I\u00a0was the\u00a0the only intern in the human centered design research group at GEMTEX Lab.\u00a0My project was\u00a0in the field of 3D virtual garment design with human experience.\u00a0I was guided by\u00a0two head professors who specialized in the fields of sensory analysis, data processing, decision making, virtual design, and a PhD scholar.<\/p>\n

The working culture at the lab\u00a0was unique with focus on personal development and growth. It also involved attending seminars of the other departments\u00a0which were\u00a0involved in textile chemistry and composites. And yes of course, the French have an aura about them. The technology\u00a0savvy nation very much amazed me. From my house\u00a0to the Lab, I used to take the underground metro\u00a0which is\u00a0world\u2019s first automated driver less metro line. They also believe in quality work management skills, and no doubt, enjoy their special lunch breaks. It is also difficult to resist from their baked delicacies. Though there were occasional\u00a0language problems, but that was never experienced at the lab.<\/p>\n

The final project report was prepared on the impact on sustainability due to virtual garment design. The project dealt with concepts regarding fit, comfort, style approach, human perception and slow fashion. In turn, how virtual design helps in providing solutions, to all the factors for the ease of garment manufacturing process. It involved indefinite time of reading, noting points, making systematic diagrams etc.<\/p>\n

Coming to Lille, it is known for the least amount of sunny days it gets\u00a0 throughout the year.\u00a0But with the internship, I did get to experience its pleasant summer. The antique architecture, the footpaths, street lights, and never\u00a0ending walks in the evening were a\u00a0part and parcel of the internship. Though the process of finalizing the internship between NIFT Mumbai and GEMTEX was quite a long process, but in the it was worth it. More than experience, I would say it was a fulfilling odyssey.<\/p>\n
