Hackathons are social coding events that bring together computer programmers, companies, and enthusiastic students to improve upon or build a new product. It\u2019s about forming teams and building an app, website, or software to achieve a particular aim in a non-stop session that lasts for days. Much like internships, a hackathon is an experience of a lifetime for a newbie programmer. And so are the lessons, memories, and friends gained during this period. Here are some reasons why it\u2019s a must for newbie programmers to drop into one of these Hackathons.<\/p>\n

1. Secure an internship \u2013<\/strong> Imagine a kid going from playschool to nursery. The transition is easier for him than for a kid directly joining nursery. Hackathons are that playschool for every programmer. Securing and surviving an internship is so much easier for someone with an experience of hackathons; after all, companies expect a fresher to have years of experience! Akshay, a 23-year-old student, understood this well in time. He participated in 4 hackathons in the last two years and landed an internship at an MNC!<\/p>\n

2. Build your idea and show off \u2013<\/strong> Whether it\u2019s about applying what you learn or putting forward your idea, hackathons are the best platforms to do something worth bragging about. It gives you an edge over others by giving you a hands-on experience of how an idea is born, developed, executed, and achieved. The problems are often very practical and are clearly described in the statements. 3. Spark up your resume \u2013<\/strong> Yes, the certificate of winning a hackathon conducted by companies like CodeForIndia and Yahoo or even a participation in one conducted at various tech fests for companies like Google and Microsoft is meaningful. It can land you an internship at leading companies of the field. It adds a spark to your resume, and you get to explain your projects and experiences in the interviews.<\/p>\n

4. Skills –<\/strong>\u00a0For most newbies, hackathon turns out to be their first chance to witness how a team functions. The importance of communication, organization, listening to the team leader, and coordinating with others are the skills that you\u2019ll take away from these competitions (and of course the prize if you win!). Explaining about the skills required before the competitions, Aditya said,\u00a0“Getting familiar with HTML\/CSS\/JS (for all front-end work) and Ruby, Python, or Node (pick one – for all back-end work) is advisable. Tools like Heroku (for quick deployment), Twitter Bootstrap (for quick front-end design\/implementation), Bitbucket\/GitHub (for managing version control across team members and rolling back when stuff breaks), Backbone.js (or an alternative MVC such as Angular or Ember for easy management of views\/data via JS), etc. are useful too.”<\/em><\/p>\n

5. A word of advice –\u00a0<\/strong>The freedom to be creative sounds great but the chances of getting things wrong are higher for a first timer. Shreya Nair, a final year engineering student who has been attending hackathons since her first year says, \u201cA good pitch i.e. pitching your idea properly is crucial; having a cool product isn\u2019t worth anything if you can\u2019t get people excited about it. Working on design is yet another point that first timers don\u2019t pay attention to. Other than that I think bringing the essentials like clothes, toothbrush, etc. is also a must.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

6. Feel the pressure<\/strong> and l<\/strong>earn from mistakes<\/strong> –\u00a0<\/strong>Eat.Sleep.Code.Repeat.<\/em> That\u2019s the kind of adventure you\u2019ll get yourself into. Hackathons often last from a day to a week. As a newbie, you are entitled to commit some basic mistakes. Sometimes the codes are complete mash-up of different languages, and sometimes you end up spending too much time on things that are not important. Whatever the mistake maybe, you learn and remember and avoid it in the future. It’s all about sleepless days, straining eyes on the screen, sleeping on the floor, and getting frustrated. Handling the pressure is yet another skill you learn and it\u2019s the key to ace these competitions. This skill will also help you survive the toughest internships.<\/p>\n

7. Meet new people –<\/strong> A chance to make something using the company\u2019s API is a chance to show off your skills and make an impression into the minds of the recruiters. The platform is huge and people you get to work with and work for are the ones who\u2019ll be your guide. Sometimes, the impression is so spot-on that you end up with more than just a prize. 8. Get your hands dirty \u2013<\/strong> Roll up your sleeves and get working because it\u2019s time to get dirty. Yes, it\u2019s all about the feeling you get when you work to create a meaningful software. It\u2019s a place to try new technologies and approach every problem with an open mind and a new idea.
