Interns\u00a0have immense potential and can do wonders to your business (Internshala, for instance, was built by a group of interns for the <strong>first two years<\/strong> of its incipience).\u00a0However, one should keep a few things in mind when it comes to intern hiring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here are some situations which you may face while hiring interns on Internshala, \u00a0and how you can fix them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>No applications\/few applications:<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"> It could be due to many reasons such as\u00a0time of the year, stipend offered, quality of your internship ad write-up, the reach of the posting, etc. Here&#8217;s what you can do:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Always plan in advance and post internship requirements at the right time.\u00a0<i style=\"font-family: sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;\"><i>(<\/i><\/i>For <em>summers<\/em>: <em>February last week or First week of \u00a0March<\/em> is the ideal time; for <em>winters: September last week or first week of October<\/em> is the right time)<\/li>\n<li>Share your internship post on all social platforms\u00a0(you can find the\u00a0share links\u00a0on your <a href=\"http:\/\/internshala.com\/employer\/dashboard?utm_source=IS_Blog&amp;utm_medium=hire-interns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Internshala dashboard<\/a>) to ensure it reaches as many candidates as possible.<\/li>\n<li>The number of applications received for an internship is <em>directly proportional<\/em> to the stipend offered. You can use the<\/span> <strong>Filter<span style=\"line-height: normal;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: normal;\">(show only relevant application)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">option on your dashboard to see only relevant applications\u00a0and\u00a0make your hiring process faster and hassle-free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18243 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/internshala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/How-to-hire-interns-filters-1024x288.png\" alt=\"How-to-hire-interns-filters\" width=\"800\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/internshala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/How-to-hire-interns-filters-1024x288.png 1024w, https:\/\/internshala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/How-to-hire-interns-filters-672x189.png 672w, https:\/\/internshala.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/How-to-hire-interns-filters.png 1365w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Assessment:<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Use the application submitted by the candidate to shortlist but\u00a0<strong>always <\/strong>assess or interview a\u00a0candidate before extending an offer letter.\u00a0You can give one short assignment, ideally not requiring\u00a0more than a few hours of efforts, to gauge her skills and sincerity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">You should also speak\u00a0to the candidate <em>at least\u00a0<\/em>once before hiring;\u00a0you will get to judge her interest better plus the candidate will\u00a0also have an opportunity to clear any doubts she may have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Students dropping out after confirming<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>: <\/strong>Unfortunately, this happens at times.\u00a0While\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">you can\u2019t read somebody\u2019s mind, this problem can be mitigated to a\u00a0large\u00a0extent if the assessment process mentioned above is carried out properly. Certain other precautions you can take are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Interview a candidate diligently and gauge how your\u00a0internship fits in with her career goals. Read <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/internshala.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/intern-hiring-important-internview-questions-to-ask\/\">5 questions you must ask while hiring an intern.<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Always issue a formal offer letter and ask the selected candidates to send back a signed copy of the same as acceptance. It is not a yes until both the parties say yes.<\/li>\n<li>If the intern is doing\u00a0the internship as a part of her curriculum, insist on getting\u00a0an\u00a0<strong>NOC<\/strong> issued by her college.<\/li>\n<li>Always keep a backup &#8211; while announcing the result keep 2\/3 (or in the proportion of the number of openings) candidates in waiting. If somebody drops out, extend the offer letter to the candidates in waiting.<\/li>\n<li>Please report a student (if you hire through Internshala) if a student drops out after accepting the offer letter. If a student is at fault, she may be banned from applying to other internships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Interns coming on board is just the beginning. If you expect great work from interns, make sure that you&#8217;re providing a great experience and mentoring too. Their role and tasks should be well defined; it should be as aligned with their career interests as possible so that the interns put in their best efforts, learn, and also have fun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We sincerely hope these simple tips help you run a great internship program.
