With this spirited narration & maximum number of \u201clikes\u201d that the post received, he now graduates to \u201cWinner of the week\u201d Hall of Fame on Internshala and wins flipkart gift voucher for Rs. 1,000\/-.<\/p>\n

Update<\/strong>: – Punit tuned out to be a real fighter and bagged another GV worth Rs. 1,000\/- for his spirited fight for “Winner of the Month” award and impressive 2000+ likes on facebook.<\/p>\n

Summer of 2010.<\/p>\n

The bright summer of 2010 was feeling much hotter to me as I had not secured an internship with just about a month & half left for the summers to start.\u00a0 Generally college also issues some seats in various companies but I wasn\u2019t a smart exam writer so my grades kept that option off the table. Then out of the blue, I got information about openings for internship at Divisional Railway Manager’s office. So I ran in with my resume to the office a couple of times & completed all the formalities and was eagerly waiting for the final list to come out.<\/p>\n

I was lucky enough to be short listed but I didn\u2019t have a clear idea what a computer undergraduate would possibly do at Railways which seemed a much homely place for Mechies & Tronics guys. But on the day one itself I realized that it isn\u2019t about one or two disciplines but its about how guys from different fields come together to make it the biggest public sector in the country. Watching Civil Engineers digging up a mass of mud to make an underground two lane railway track, (Elec)tronics people setting up microwave & radio communications systems, Mech students working on lathes & welders for railway tracks construction, and Electrical guys setting up various telephone, internet & track side communication system taught me the complete work cycle in the most interesting & convincing way.<\/p>\n

But what drew my attention the most were the rooms filled with hundreds of routers, wires & monitors. I could clearly see movement of a train sitting in a room with an accuracy of few meters, working of various signals, track locations & their real time re-allocations. I could see how my ticket is being routed through the shortest possible route to main office situated at Mumbai & how it took alternate paths in case of real time breakdowns.<\/p>\n

I got good remarks on my presentation & reports there as well as at the college and got good grades but at the end of the day what I cherished more is the learning experience. I had heard a Chinese proverb somewhere, \u201cTell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand\u201d. I heard it a long time ago but truly understood it in those 30 wonderful days at Divisional Railway Office.<\/p>\n
