About USRA: – <\/strong>Since 1969, the Universities Space Research Association (USRA – http:\/\/spaceradiation.usra.edu\/nsrss\/<\/a>), a private, nonprofit corporation, has worked closely with NASA. USRA’s Division of Space Biomedicine was founded in 1983 to address the biomedical issues faced by humans in space. Harrison Schmitt, lunar module pilot of Apollo 17, was named as the first Director of the Division. In late 1990, the Division was renamed the Division of Space Life Sciences (DSLS) reflecting a broader charter: “to stimulate, encourage, and assist research in the NASA life sciences.” This charter continues today and is encapsulated within three broad programs: the Science Program, the Extramural Support Program and the Education Program.<\/p>\n

About NASA Space Radiation Summer School: – <\/strong>The NASA Space Radiation Summer School (\u201cNSRSS\u201d) at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory is designed to provide a \u201cpipeline\u201d of researchers to tackle the challenges of harmful radiation exposure to humans who will travel on space exploration missions.\u00a0 Co-sponsored by NASA\u2019s Space Radiation Research Program, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Universities Space Research Association, the three-week course has been offered each summer for eight years through an open and increasingly competitive application process.<\/p>\n

This concentrated program is taught by leading university and national laboratory biologists and physicists actively engaged in NASA space radiation research and BNL experts in heavy ion experimentation and methods. Each \u201cprofessor\u201d lectures on his\/her research specialty, with topics including DNA damage and repair, genotoxicity, cell cycle checkpoints and apoptosis, mutagenesis, genomic instability, epigenetics, cell and tissue signaling, neuro degeneration, systems biology, and the relationship of these processes to carcinogenesis and late degenerative effects following exposure to space radiation, as well as the space radiation environment, physics and biochemistry of charged particle interactions, track structure, dosimetry, accelerator operations and space radiation protection.<\/p>\n

Who can apply<\/strong>: – The program is open to under graduate, post graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty all over world with an interest in radiation biology. Due to the intense nature of the three-week course, selected students must possess oral and written proficiency in the English language.<\/p>\n

Location: –<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>United States of America<\/p>\n

Duration: –<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>3 Weeks in summer 2013 (May 29th – June 21st, 2013)<\/p>\n

Stipend: – <\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Selected students are provided with housing and subsistence\/meals and travel support to include in-country air fare. The air-fare from India to US must be borne by the student<\/p>\n
