This internship is your chance to engage in an exciting new exploration initiative designed to study the lunar surface robotically. Never thought that you would get to play a role in the next Moon landing, did you? Well, here is your chance. The last date to apply is 20th<\/sup> January 2012<\/strong> \u2013 hurry!<\/p>\n

About Lunar & Planetary Institute: – <\/strong>Lunar & Planetary Institute (LPI, http:\/\/www.lpi.usra.edu\/lpi\/about.shtml<\/a>) is a research institute that provides support services to NASA and the planetary science community, and conducts planetary science research under the leadership of staff scientists, visiting researchers, and postdoctoral fellows. The Lunar and Planetary Institute was first described by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 as \u201ca center of research where scientists working in the sciences of space cooperate to profoundly affect the community\u2019s knowledge of the universe.\u201d\u00a0 The Institute serves in three main capacities: Research Science, Service to NASA and the Planetary Science Community, and Education and Public Outreach.<\/p>\n

About Internship: – <\/strong>After a long hiatus, NASA is returning humans to the Moon. The agency and its partners in academia, industry, and the international community are engaged in an exciting new exploration initiative designed to study the lunar surface robotically beginning in 2008 and with crewed landers before 2020. NASA asked the National Research Council (NRC) to develop a set of science priorities for this lunar exploration initiative. They recently released a report that summarizes The Scientific Context for Exploration of the Moon.<\/p>\n

To help integrate those science priorities with NASA’s exploration program, the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) is hosting a special summer intern program to evaluate possible landing sites for robotic and human exploration missions. Two teams of students will work with LPI science staff and other collaborators to evaluate the best landing sites to address each of the NRC\u2019s science priorities.\u00a0 This will be a unique team activity that should foster extensive discussions among students and senior science team members.<\/p>\n

Who can apply<\/strong>: – College graduate students in geology, planetary science, and related programs are eligible. Preference will be given to graduate students, but applications from excellent undergraduate students with at least 50 semester hours of credit will also be considered.\u00a0 Relevant fields for undergraduate students are geology, astronomy, chemistry, and physics. Selection is based on these criteria: (1) scholarship, curriculum, and experience; and (2) career objectives and scientific interest<\/p>\n

Location: –<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Houston, <\/strong>Texas, <\/strong>United States of America<\/p>\n

Duration: –<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>10 Weeks in summer 2012 (May 29th<\/sup> \u2013 August 3rd<\/sup> 2012)<\/p>\n

Stipend: – <\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0If selected, you will receive a $5000 stipend plus a U.S. travel stipend of $1000. (Foreign nationals will receive a $1500 foreign travel reimbursement in lieu of the travel stipend.)<\/p>\n
