The Internship in Vernacular Eco-architecture at Dharmalaya is a formal, academically-supervised internship programme designed to provide architects (and students of architecture) with both practical experience and deeper theoretical knowledge in the arts and practices of sustainable building, with an emphasis on the Kangra style of vernacular architecture as expressed in the neo-traditional approach of eco-architect Didi Contractor of Himachal Pradesh.

Dharmalaya is an Indian charitable organisation devoted to education and empowerment for compassionate living, with a practical focus on sustainable village development, contemplative service-learning, immersive ecotourism, and preservation of traditional wisdom.
About the Internship:

Through this programme, interns will have the opportunity to gain practical experience working with trained green builders on one or more sites in the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. Initial training and work will be done at theDharmalaya Institute in Bir, and for longer-term interns there will be opportunities to work at other sites in the area as well. Didi Contractor will monitor the programme and will meet with the interns a few times a month or as circumstances allow.

Only those candidates can apply who:
  1. are available for full time (in-office) internship
  2. are available for duration of 3 months
  3. have relevant skills and interests
  4. have already graduated or are currently in any year of study

Other requirements:
  1. Applicants for the Internship in Vernacular Eco-Architecture should meet the following minimum requirements:
  2. Academics: Current student or graduate of a degree programme in architecture.
  3. Language: Interns must be able to speak at least conversational English, and at least basic Hindi is also strongly recommended.
  4. Time: Interns must be able to commit to a minimum of one month doing full-time work and study in the programme (longer commitments of 3-12 months are preferred, but one month is the minimum requirement).
Additional Information:

Generally, new interns arrive in batches, on a fixed date for a group orientation. When you submit your application, you may indicate the start date that would work best for you, but be aware that we may ask you to begin on a different date, depending on when we can schedule the arrival of a new batch of interns.
