About the internship

Selected intern's day-to-day responsibilities include:

1. Work with the project team to support research and community engagement and field visits to Shahdara for urban waste management
2. Identify strategic opportunities and connections, the prospect for ideas and initiatives, and act as a conduit for two-way communication between the project team and the community in the Shahdara area
3. Stay current on processes and implementation activities related to community-driven urban waste management across other cities
4. Develop and maintain strong, authentic relationships and bond with community members and engage them in project interventions in the area
5. Organize community meetings with local residents for various interventions under the project, identify venues, and mobilize local people and community champions on-ground as and when required
6. Supervise the implementation of all project outreach and interventions, including - generating awareness of the project, implement community-specific waste segregation and disposal training; capacity building of community waste champions', etc.
7. Create regular reports on fieldwork to keep the project team updated and document impact through stakeholder interviews, observational research, and visual documentation

Added requirements

1. Bachelor's degree in social work, public administration, public policy, or related fields; Master's degree preferred

2. Prior experience in community development, community engagement, and interaction

3. Experience in working on waste management or WASH projects preferred

4. Knowledge of best practices in community building, outreach, community relations, capacity building, convening, and meeting facilitation is desired

5. Experience in working with urban and peri-urban communities

6. Excellent written and verbal communications skills

7. Should have the ability to work independently as well as in a mutually supportive team environment

8. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with a wide variety of people both internally and externally

9. Expertise in the Hindi language is a must

10. People familiar with the area and living near to Shahdara will be given preference

Additional information

Please note: This role will require 2-3 days of fieldwork per week. The rest of the weekdays will be dedicated to research (desktop review) work and can be done on a work-from-home basis. Vertiver is looking for a passionate community engagement intern who is based out of the east Delhi area for an urban waste management project by the government of India. The duration of the internship will be 6 months and will require field-based work in the Shahdara area of New Delhi, engaging and interacting with the community on various aspects of waste management. The person will be expected to develop a rapport and facilitate relationships between the project team, community leaders and champions, institutional heads, local residents, and other stakeholders in the project landscape.
