Genetic Counselor Job

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct comprehensive pedigree analysis to assess genetic risks and inheritance patterns in families. Utilize detailed family histories to identify genetic conditions and potential carriers.
2. Provide pre- and post-test genetic counseling to patients, ensuring they understand the potential benefits, limitations, and implications of genetic testing and results.
3. Collaborate with diagnostic laboratories to ensure proper testing protocols and procedures are followed.
4. Engage in negotiations with labs and insurance providers to ensure the best service for patients.
5. Analyze genetic test results and communicate findings to patients and healthcare providers. Explain complex genetic information in a clear, understandable way, and support patients in making informed choices.
6. Provide guidance on the ethical, emotional, and psychological implications of genetic testing and diagnosis, supporting patients in understanding their options.
7. Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, medical geneticists, and laboratory professionals, to ensure high-quality, comprehensive patient care.
8. Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential patient records, including family histories, test results, and counseling notes.
9. Educate patients and healthcare professionals about genetic conditions, testing options, and available resources. Advocate for patient needs, including referrals for additional services, support groups, and follow-up care.

Skill:

1. Familiarity with additional genetic testing platforms and cutting-edge technologies.
2. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, data analysis, reporting).
3. Excellent project management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
4. Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
