📌About the Event
The 2026 UNIDROIT Essay Competition is an international legal essay competition launched to mark 100 years of UNIDROIT’s impact on private law harmonisation. The theme is “Harmonising Private Law and Shaping the Future – 100 Years of UNIDROIT’s Impact.” Participants can write on UNIDROIT’s historical legal work or propose future areas for harmonising transnational private and commercial law.

Theme: Harmonising Private Law and Shaping the Future – 100 Years of UNIDROIT’s Impact
Mode of Conduct: Online submission
Submission Format: Essays must be submitted in PDF format through the official online submission form.
Essay Language: Submissions are accepted in English or French.
Word Limit: Essay length should be 2,000–3,000 words, excluding footnotes and references.
Essay Categories:
Category A: Historical review and analysis of UNIDROIT’s earlier academic studies.
Category B: Future-looking analysis on legal gaps in transnational private and commercial law.

🎯 Eligibility & Rules
- Eligibility: Open to law students, graduates, researchers, and junior legal professionals with less than five years of legal practice, from any nationality.
- Not Eligible: Participants in advanced stages of their legal careers and tenured academics are not eligible.
- Submission Rule: Each participant can make only one submission in English or French.
- Email Entries: Not accepted; entries must be submitted through the online form only.
- Original Work: The essay must be the participant’s sole and original work.
- AI Usage Rule: AI tools may be used only for research, proofreading, and spelling checks. AI-generated essays, in full or in part, can be disqualified.
- Research Requirement: Essays must include strong legal research, footnotes, and proper citations. Lack of adequate references may lead to disqualification.
🏆 Prize Details and Value
- 1st Prize: 2,500 EUR + publication opportunities.
- 2nd Prize: 1,500 EUR + publication opportunities.
- 3rd Prize: 500 EUR + publication opportunities.
- 4th and 5th Position: Publication opportunities.
- Certificate: Winners will receive an award certificate.
- Webinar Opportunity: Winners will present their research in an online webinar organised by UNIDROIT.
- Publication Benefit: Winners may be invited to publish their essays on the UNIDROIT and UNIDROIT Foundation websites. The 1st prize winner may also be invited to submit the essay for consideration in the Uniform Law Review, subject to peer review.
